These cabs are self cut, and polished! Mookaite happens to be one of my favorite jaspers. Mookaite jasper, a beautiful type of quartz, is only found in one area of the world, in the Kennedy Ranges near Gascoyne Junction in Western Australia. It is found in outcroppings near Mooka Creek, where it gets its name.  The name "mooka" is an Aboriginal word meaning "running water" and refers to the numerous springs that feed into Mooka Creek. Even though this jasper is spelled many different ways (mookite, moakite, moukaite, etc.), the correct spelling is considered "mookaite" after Mooka Creek.

A sedimentary rock, mookaite jasper was formed when the ancient sea bed in Western Australia was "jasperized" into quartz rock.l  Mookaite jasper is made up of the skeletal remains of radiolaria, a microscopic protozoa with a hard silica shell.  Over the course of millenia, many billions of their remains were deposited as sediment in the shallow areas of ancient sea beds. When the waters receded, the remains were cemented into solid rock by additional silica carried in groundwater. Minerals in the water and other marine organisms produced the varied coloration of mookaite jasper.  Occasionally impressions of ammonites and other organisms have been found in the stone.
